Leadership Magnification Effect ©
…leadership doing is what we do. Leadership being is how we do the what.
Sometimes you need to use an alternative lens to learn something new and see something differently. One of the tools we use to great effect at Scala-Advance is the Leadership Magnification Effect or LME
Your behaviours are always on display
Magnification is the process of enlarging something only in appearance, not in physical size. Magnification allows you to scale up visuals or images to be able to see more detail, to be able to see what’s on display and being a leader means your behaviours are always on display.
As a leader how you behave impacts those around you, and drives outcomes both positively and negatively, which ultimately drives results.
If you’re re a leader of five or five hundred people your behaviour impacts and influences others, and because you’re a leader this impact and influence has a magnification effect or LME© Everything you do or don’t do, everything you say or don’t say, has a knock on effect. As a leader you play an important role in the lives of others. You are responsible for setting goals, driving results, managing performance and rewarding people.
How does it work?
A simple example of the Leadership Magnification Effect© could be something as basic as having lunch and with whom you have it. If you regularly go to lunch with the same two or three people in the team, something you may consider as a simple lunch with your friends, can be magnified and perceived as favouritism. Your actions and behaviours are on display and magnified because you are the leader of the team. Are you the type of person who is always running late, is the last person to arrive at a meeting? As a leader if you display this behaviour then it can drive the same behaviour throughout the organisation, where lack of punctuality is acceptable because that is what has been magnified by you, the leader.
What does it mean?
Behaviours displayed by leaders get adopted rapidly by the organisation, business unit, team or individuals. People in positions of leadership and power, who have impact and influence through their behaviour and actions, can influence the behaviour and actions of those around them. It can be very positive. If a leader demonstrates in actions what they say, then the alignment between words and behaviours, behaviours and actions is very transparent and powerful which leads to trust, confidence and long-term business success.
